In the Windham Center Cemetery, there is an 18th c. gravestone to the four children (two sets of twins) of Josiah and Mary Manning. Josiah, a gravestone carver, made the stone. In the Old Trumbull Burying Ground, in Lebanon, there is a stone “In Memory of the six Children of Mr. John Dewey and Mrs. Rhoda, his wife. Ebenezer died March 20th 1769 at age one Month. Ebenezer 2nd ….” The photograph cuts off the rest of the names. John Dewey (1735-1830) and Rhoda (1735 -1820) lost six children in seven years. Many couples lost multiple babies and toddlers to childhood diseases before vaccinations. The photograph is from James Slater ‘s book “The Colonial Burying Grounds of Eastern Connecticut.” The Dewey stone is no longer legible due to acid rain and lichen.
