 Executive Director

 

The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Windham Textile and History Museum (the Mill Museum). 

 

General Responsibilities: 

  • The onsite, part-time executive director will manage day-to-day operations of the museum, which is open Saturday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Additional hours as required. 
  • Supervise and train staff (paid and volunteer), and delegate duties as needed. 
  • Manage receipt and payment of museum funds in coordination with the treasurer and bookkeeper. 
  • Research and write grant applications appropriate to museum programs and operations. 
  • Establish and maintain museum calendar, including exhibitions, activities, rentals, and special uses. 
  • Provide administrative support to Board of Director committees, including Fundraising; Finance; Curatorial, Exhibits and Education; and Membership committees. 
  • Promote and market the museum in social media and local publications. 
  • Represent the museum in public settings. 
  • Maintain partnerships with donors, governmental agencies, nonprofits, and local businesses. 
  • Report monthly to the museum Board of Directors. Establish goals for the museum and its operations, with the Board of Directors, that will be evaluated annually.

Qualifications/Skills: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant field applicable to museum operations. Transferrable skills from experience will be considered.  
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational and planning skills. 
  • Proficiency in computer skills, social media, online educational programs, and video conferencing. 

Preferred Attributes: 

  • Master’s degree preferred in a relevant field, such as history, art history, museum studies, public history, or a business-related field. 
  • Proven leadership ability and experience in a business or professional position. 
  • Successful fundraising experience. 
  • Experience developing educational programs.

Lead Educator

Senior Curator / Historian in Residence

To take the lead in developing and executing strategies to care for the Mill Museum’s collection of historic objects and objects (i.e., serve as Museum’s Collections Manager); create, improve, and maintain its permanent interpretive exhibits; and conduct and publish relevant historical research.

To work as part of a team with the Museum’s other staff, including but not limited to creating or facilitating the Museum’s temporary exhibits; maintaining the Museum’s website; and preparing educational materials. 

To advance the Museum’s reputation as an educational destination.

This is a part-time, 10 hours a week position that requires strong research, writing, organizational, and computer skills. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, team-oriented, a natural communicator, detail-oriented, and can manage projects from concept to completion. Hours are flexible, but it is important to be available to other staff and to the public and should include being in the Museum at least five hours a week when it is open to the public.

This position is supervised by the Executive Director.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Museum’s online catalog.
  • Care for and manage historical objects in the Museum’s collections in accordance with standard museum practices.
  • Be familiar with both standard and best practices for caring for historical objects. Stay abreast of changes in developments with the field.
  • Develop and/or update the Museum’s collections policies, especially regarding metadata, copyright, accessions, and deaccessions.
  • Maintain the Museum’s permanent exhibits. Update and redesign exhibits, as needed, according to standard museum practices. Update signage and exhibit spaces in accordance with ADA accessibility standards.
  • Maintain the “Archives” and “History” pages of the Museum’s website.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within local/regional/state museum community.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers involved in curatorial activities. Supervise curatorial volunteers, interns, and other staff.
  • Participate in in-house and outreach events.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Senior Educator, and Museum volunteers, especially on tours, lectures, temporary exhibits, grant writing and management, and website content.
  • Be willing to worka flexible schedule, including museum open hours and times most convenient to visitors and researchers.
  • Provide a monthly board report on activities.

Necessary Skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; copywriting, editing, and proofreading experience highly desired.
  • Proficient in using social media platforms, WordPress, and Publisher (or similar graphic design programs).
  • Strong in-person and virtual verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field, preferably in history or library science (relevant experience may substitute). Excitement for, and dedication to, the Mill Museum’s mission. Strong ability to both work in a team and independently as needed. Ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities.

Salaried Position: $20.00 per hour for ten hours per week. Two weeks paid vacation.
